Cartoonists
Northwest's October meeting
was dedicated to the award winners,
participants, and hard-working
volunteers who made this Spawns
of Insomnia 2005 a smashing
success. Spawns of Insomnia
was first held as a
CNW event in 2003, when
a group of artists came together
to spend 24 hours creating 24-page
comics. This year's Spawns was
even bigger, with 25 artists,
promotion space at Cascadia
Con, raffles, a fundraiser
for Friends
of the Library and a sponsorship.
The
LiftPort Group gave out
$50 cash prizes to every participant
that completed the 24-page goal,
and also awarded a grand prize
for best overall story. The
winner for 2005 was cartoonist
Kevin Boze, who's comic Buck
Starkers and the Aunt People
of the Evil Vicinity takes
reader's on a space journey
full of quips, parodies and
wry humor.
“I
more or less made it up on the
spot,” said Boze. “I
knew, when I sat down, that
I was going to see about doing
a classic "journey"
story and that I was going to
make fun of "Star Wars"
every chance I got. I love puns
(obviously) and the name "Buck
Starkers" suggested itself
when I was in the car on the
way to the convention.”
